Arachidonic acid and DHA are probably the true Essential Fatty Acids
Found several papers that propose that true Essential Fatty acids are probably Arachidonic and DHA, and not Linoleic and alpha-linolenic as currently believed.
The reason for the new proposal is that removal of LA and ALA from the parenteral nutrition with addition of AA and DHA does not lead to essential fatty acids symptoms. (R1)
Another paper also claimed that synthesis pathway of AA from Linoleic acid is not able to cover the needs in infants, therefore infants must obtain AA from breast milk or formula. (R2)
I have a hypothesis that chronic Arachidonic acid deficiency combined with increased oxidative stress may lead to obsessive-compulsive disorder.
One of the related effects of taking Fluoxetine (SSRI) is that it increases incorporation of AA into membranes (in rats). (R3)
AA is the source of downstream signalling of serotonin and dopamine receptors.
AA also protects brain from oxidative stress (R4).
