Astrocyte metabolic coupling in Tourette syndrome pathogenesis

This paper points to a possible dysfunction in the metabolites shuttling between astrocytes and neurons in TS patients.

Neurons export glutamate which is taken up by astrocytes to be converted to glutamine which is transferred back to neurons.

Astrocytes also feed neurons with lactate as a fuel.

This research found some strong correlation in genes that provide that processes with TS. Which indicates that the syndrome is related to energy metabolism of the neurons.
