GSK3b induces autophagy

I was surprised to find out that GSK3b activity induces autophagy.

Overactive GSK3b is implicated in a variety of psychiatric disorders (depression, OCD, schizophrenia, bipolar) and it directly inhibits NRF2 pathway, which leads to increased oxidative stress.

What GSK3b also does - it inhibits mTORC1, which is active when the cell has abundance of nutrition, and it promotes protein synthesis and other useful processes. However, active MTORC1 inhibits autophagy (clean up), because when there is plenty of amino acids, there is no need to break down proteins to extract amino acids.

Since I’m looking for possible causes of increased activity of GSK3b, I realized, that perhaps a great need for the clean up could be driving GSK3b? (something I will be exploring now). GSK3b induces autophagy (R1)

Another possible reason is that if the cell needs something and can’t get it from outside, maybe it tries to activate autophagy and this way to get the missing nutrient?
